Alumia Institute
Interior Decoration and Furnishings
About
Alumia Institute is a campus based facility focused on the betterment of aging individuals through engaging activities, and healthy diet. Alumia was founded on the research-supported belief that they can encourage healthy aging by doing activities that stimulate the brain and nourish the body.
Their Kynemics program addresses four domains—Physical, Cognitive, Nutrition, and Social—stimulating cognitive function through a personalized program with our specialty-trained attendants and therapists.
My contribution consisted of the overall buildout planning, user experience of the space, installation of wayfinding and artwork, and design of the tactile furniture elements that would become some of the main interaction pieces through out the space.
Concepts
I designed and prototyped a series of furnishings for the facility’s main gathering spaces through a process of sketching, scale models, construction line drawings, and 3D modeling software. Once approved, each piece was manufactured in collaboration with a local furniture maker to talk through details of manufacturing and installation.
The final product is a collection of custom made furniture that speaks to a use of simple and clean materials which become a part of Alumia’s branding language.
Wayfinding
In addition I designed, fabricated, and installed custom made wayfinding signage. These were incorporated to help distinguish the different session rooms for the members to use while doing their daily activities. Each one is hand bent from plexiglass using a jig including several color sliders for their respective cohort groups.
