Ai Weiwei
Exhibit and Gallery Buildout
About
Ai Weiwei is a Chinese contemporary artist this is active in mediums such as sculpture, installation, architecture, curation, photography, and film, as well as social, political and cultural dissonance. As a part of telling his story and showcasing his work, a touring exhibit featuring his zodiac sculptures visited Denver in 2017 with the McNichols Civic Center building being the final destination.
MATTER was asked to help curate and design the experience of this show through the Civic Center’s exhibit and gallery spaces. I used our signature shelving system and adapted it to fit the space directly. The shelving system is designed in such a way to fluctuate with the space as the exhibit changes. If needed the shelves themselves can unhook and change layout or simply be taken down to conserve on space as opposed to disassembling the entire structure.
As you move through the gallery, each panel showcases the process behind Ai Weiwei’s zodiac sculptures with information available in three separate languages. In addition to the main wall display panels, I helped visualize an entryway piece, timeline, and other secondary information about Ai Weiwei through vinyl and lasercut wood signage.
